Bulgaria is a country on the Balkan Peninsula of southeastern Europe. The Balkan Peninsula derives its name from the Balkan or Stara Planina mountain range which runs through the center of Bulgaria into eastern Serbia.
Bulgaria is bordered by Romania on the north, Yugoslavia and Macedonia on the west, Greece and Turkey on the south, and the Black See on the east. Mountains cover most of Bulgaria. Fertile valleys and plans separate the mountains in many areas.

The Balkan Mountains cross Bulgaria from west to east. Botev Peak, which rises 7.795 feet, is the tallest mountain in the range.
The Transitional Mountains and Lowlands lie south of the Balkan Mountains, between the Black See on the east and the Rhodope Mountains on the west and south. Farmers raise many fruits and vegetables in the region’s Maritsa and Tundza river valleys.
The Rhodope Mountains lie in southernmost Bulgaria. The country’s highest point, Musala Peak, rises 9,596 feet above sea level in the range.
Bulgaria’s climate varies from region to region because of differences in the terrain. In January, the average temperatures in the country range from 2ºC near the Black See to -17º C in central Bulgaria. Marked by four distinct seasons, Bulgaria enjoys a generally favorable climate that is one of the country's best features. In July, the average temperature is 24ºC throughout most of the country. The summers are humid in northern Bulgaria and dry in southern Bulgaria. The average yearly precipitation in Bulgaria is 63 cm. But mountains areas usually get more than 100 cm yearly. Snowfall is generally light expected in the mountains. Bulgaria has three national parks (Pirin, Rila and Central Balkan) and many reservation areas. Pirin, Rila and Central Balkan are among the largest and most valuable protected areas in Europe. The National Parks include rivers, lakes, natural landmarks, waterfalls, and magnificent landscapes.
